When l saw this little guy at our local zoo l knew he would make an amazing scratchboard - all those lovely patterns and textures waiting to be stippled. l started with a full concept drawing on vellum, working out the design and lighting, then transferred it to the scratchboard and jumped in. Like many of these detailed pieces, l wonder about halfway in if l've lost my mind. Because l love a challenge l'm always happy l stuck with it. My tool of choice is a sewing needle l fix to a homemade handle. lt gives me the ability to work small and fine, so please, lean in and enjoy it up close.
