The European Red Fox is an introduced species in Australia where it has been and continues to be an ecological disaster. They are extremely adaptable animals and thrive in urban environments, which serves to make them almost impossible to eradicate from Australia despite the best efforts of conservationists. However, this does not and should not detract from the fact they are a beautiful animal in their own right. I have had a lot to do with foxes from a conservation perspective and have always admired and appreciated them. In this painting I really wanted to capture that moment when a lurking fox breaks cover, senses honed and intense, moving stealthily through the grass. I wanted to capture their beauty and grace but also their menace to anything small enough to be a meal.
