This Cygnet is a young Trumpeter Swan. They are the heaviest living bird native to North America. By 1933, fewer than 70 wild trumpeters were known to exist, and extinction seemed threatening. However, aerial surveys discovered a Pacific population of several thousand trumpeter swans. They were gradually restored and the North American population was over 46,000 birds by 2010. I found this Cygnet with its parents, in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, Ontario.
