Hidden in a tree and therefore not noticed until fall, several of these elaborate nests were spotted in nearby woods. My grandmother used to say the higher the nests, the more snow would fall next winter. True enough, these nests were not high and the winter snow was less than usual. I have always been amazed at the instincts of these lofty fliers who gather wood and colored plant fibers to communally construct wonderful structures for their seasonal homes. Truly, they are master engineers and designers as well as beneficial pollinators who provide natural insect control!
