My inspiration for this painting was seeing a magnificent green turtle basking in the sun on the beach on the Big Island during a visit to Hawaii. I was able to use reference photos taken by my brother while scuba diving. All seven species of sea turtles are endangered in some areas of the world, while all other populations are threatened. Many of the threats are human related, including poaching, development, plastic trash and marine debris, bycatch due to imprecise fishing methods, oil spills and climate change. Marine life faces tremendous challenges but solutions are being implemented, which gives me hope.
