During my stay in South Africa I had the exhilarating opportunity to often get scarily close to wildlife – a lion sighting during a walking safari, and an elephant charge that almost toppled our van. But meeting “The Thinker” was, however, a very pleasant encounter. This western lowland gorilla in one of the zoos there was one of the most expressive animals I have come across. Sometimes she would smile to herself, at times her face would break into a frown. At one point she seemed to be lost in thought and for a second seemed to light up to an “aha” moment – which is when I captured a photo and later recreated this on paper.
