I had seen a Great Blue Heron fishing for sculpins in a similar scene many years before I got around to starting this piece. The combination of placing a heron and a big wave together immediately creates tension, which is why the heron’s pose has an intense posture. The heron has only a few more seconds before it will have to take flight. The highlight of the painting is the glow of light coming through the wave which is always a favourite subject in my seascapes.
