The Great Horned Owl is also known as the Tiger Owl due to its colouring and predatory instincts. This painting is of the subspecies known as the Coastal Great Horned Owl due to its specific camouflage pattern matched to the bark and trees of the BC coastal range. I once experienced this owl’s talons on my scalp on a trail run. She swooped down from her perch and attempted to grab the crown of my head! Unsuccessful in lifting me from the ground, she continued down the trail and up into the trees. I was momentarily agitated.
