We’ve lost our connection to other species, endangering and exploiting sentient individuals in the process. Every one has a story, whether used for experimentation, food or entertainment, living captive in a zoo, or facing increasing perils in the wild. Their stories are inextricably linked with our own, and like ours, are filled with both loss and hope. Through each portrait, I acknowledge the individual, for it is surely as individuals that they see themselves. Angel is a 31-year-old female western lowland gorilla. She’s never lived in the wild, having been born in the Los Angeles Zoo. She was then sent to the Denver Zoo before landing in the Houston Zoo where she has lived since 2016. Her keepers call her a ‘gorilla’s gorilla.’ She is all about other gorillas. She has a distinct personality and loves popcorn as a forage item. She has found her place in the family group and the silverback male is showing a fondness for her.
