During an extremely cold snap in January, red-tailed hawks and even vultures began checking out our feeder area. Upon hearing a loud crash one afternoon, I found a red-tailed had flown into the balcony. Carefully picking him up, we kept him in a large cage till we were able to take him to a rehabilitation center. Finally after 8 weeks he was well enough to be released. He was reluctant to leave the box so the caregiver reached in and brought him out. I had hoped for flight photos for a painting reference but the bond between these two as they looked at each other became the inspiration for the painting. Local wildlife rehabilitation centers such as Salthaven are priceless.
