The Common Loon is an iconic bird of Canadian wilderness and seemed the most appropriate species to depict for the AFC show at the International Ornithological Congress in Vancouver in 2018. There were numerous depictions of the loon usually on the water and I wanted to show another side. I was intrigued by the repeated patterning of the feathers on the back which prompted me to display the bird swooping out of the air. I kept the background clean white to emphasize the drama.
