lf you garden for wildlife and specifically for birds, then you know the value of a brush pile. Ours not only serves to give protection and shelter to our resident towhee but also our song sparrows, Juncos, bushtits, chickadees, Jays, Bewick's and winter wrens and our Douglas squirrels, as well as the many birds that seasonally migrate through our yard. Even the occasional mallard can hide under it after she visits our pond. We have watched the birds beat a hasty retreat into it when the Sharp-shinned Hawk comes hunting and on a cold, wintery day they take shelter in it to get out of the wind and the rare snowfall. The benefits are many so if you haven't already, think about adding this feature to your bird garden and wait for the birds to put on a show.
