I fell in love with pelicans on my first visit to the South Georgian Coast. I became fascinated with their many textures, from their long, sleek beaks to the paintbrush-like clusters of their underbellies. They fly and dive from great heights like fighter planes yet float along the water's surface like hollow rubber ducks. All these qualities came together in this piece with an added visual element of wind catching the back feathers which I felt softened this hardy bird.
