This piece is a contemporary representation of a traditional subject. I chose to depict this majestic penguin as a piece of delicate wedgewood blue china would appear. The raku firing process creates cracks on the surface of the glaze in which carbon gets trapped creating the black crackle effect. He is an allegorical representation of the delicate future of many penguin species. Many of these flightless birds are threatened by changes in oceanic environments which are being driven by climate change.
