"Urban Jungle" is a painting that's been on my to do list for years. I've spent so much time standing at the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square in London looking at this scene, wondering what it might be like to paint a real lion on one of those plinths. Until now I'd not been brave enough to try it. It's such a serious commitment in time and energy knowing full well that even halfway through the painting it may not work! A perspective nightmare was made much harder by the fact that the whole scene was put together by many many photographs I had taken over a few days. I couldn't believe my luck when it rained and the sun came out giving me the wonderful sheen and reflections off Landseer's lion and off the ground too. The woman and child pointing at the lion are actually my neighbours. I got them to pose in my garden to add them to the composition. The lion was from one of my many visits to the Serengeti!
