“The Canyon Wren pours out a cascade of sweet liquid notes, like the spray of a waterfall in sunshine.” ~ Ralph Hoffman. I find that the cascading notes of the canyon wren's call are one of the most unexpected gifts the arid southwest has to offer. While hiking the deep canyons in southern Nevada I usually hear the tiny wren’s evocative call long before I can see them. The towering cliffs possess the ideal acoustics to turn their melodious call into absolutely unforgettable magic. Closely observe the dark gray limestone in the painting and you will find small circular fossils that are the remains of crinoids or sea lilies. This is ancient evidence of the life that once flourished in the region when southern Nevada was covered by a warm shallow sea, nearly 500 million years ago.
