I was inspired to tackle this challenging woodcut after spotting the woodpecker in the forest near Grants Pass, OR. I am not a professional birder, but I am always looking for them so I was especially delighted to see this White- headed Woodpecker foraging in the dark trunks. It is the first I have ever seen and I looked it up to identify the species. I learned that it is the only bird with an all white head and all black body. Its coloring blends perfectly with its wooded habitat. The pattern of the bark was subtle, almost black and white, but with a fine dusting of rust fungus.
