Endemic to southern Africa, cape vultures are among the largest raptors in Africa. Cape vultures are also one of the most endangered species of vulture in the world. Not too long ago, these old world vultures were readily seen throughout the region. However, they have been in a steep decline since the 1980s. There are several reasons for the declining numbers, but the main threats are electric power lines and towers, poisoning, and fewer large animals for food. Vultures are critical to the health and safety of our natural world. There are many advocacy groups in South Africa and other countries working diligently to save vultures of all species.
