The beautiful Bush Stone Curlews of far north Queensland dance their slow pas de deux through the soft leaf litter of the garden. Whilst their habitat is threatened in more populous areas, they ease their gentle presence into urban and rural life. Their haunting cries ululate through the short twilight into the evening, with long, slow passages of song building to crescendos of chorus as others of the flock add their voices in a thrilling finale of an echo of the gentle tiptoeing strides, interspersed with rapid dashes ending in a statuesque stillness. They have much to teach us in their complex communication of music and dance, their courtship and cautious parenting by the couple, and their adaptability to human presence. As with so many species, they make the effort to fit into our world….
