I am fascinated by the amazing variety and spectacular colours of birds around the world. It is as if mother nature hand-painted each one of them. These Lilac-breasted Roller birds live in sub-Saharan Africa. Both males and females are similarly coloured and are about the size of a crow. Their name comes from their dramatic courtship flights, which are quite acrobatic, with fast high-diving and rolling movements which include a side to side rocking motion. To have an advantage, they prefer to perch high, on well-spaced tree tops so they can survey their prey in the bushy game lands. They do not live in areas of human habitation which is important in their preservation. Conservation of their natural habitat is critical for the survival of these beautiful birds.
