This rare flightless bird is found on the island of New Caledonia. Having the opportunity to watch this endemic forage for food was a special experience. Kneeling down and observing its behavior, you thought of how they had evolved in isolation with no terrestrial predators. They were easy prey for introduced dogs, cats and rats. This national bird still faces those threats but Riviere Bleue Park offers a fairly secure future, although they are still on the endangered list.
