Ruby-crowned Kinglets are energetic little migratory birds with a beautiful, distinctive song. With wings flicking, they hop among tree leaves in search of insects, rarely staying still.
While it was being chased by another kinglet, I observed this bird when it momentarily landed on a branch in front of me, vividly flashing its crown. Kinglets display the red crown most prominently when agitated or excited.
I marvel at the distances these diminutive birds travel during migration, and look forward to their arrival each April.
