Grizzly bears once ranged across much of North America, from Alaska to Mexico and eastward to Hudson Bay. Today, their distribution is largely confined to western Canada, Alaska, and parts of the northwestern United States. Although generally solitary, they gather in impressive numbers during annual salmon runs along rivers and coastal waterways. Throughout history, grizzlies have experienced an often difficult relationship with humans, retreating into increasingly remote landscapes that provide the extensive undisturbed habitat they require. As one of North America’s apex predators, the Grizzly Bear plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Continued research, habitat protection, and conservation efforts will be essential to ensuring its future.
