A leopard reclines comfortably on a tree limb, safely above the lions, hyenas, and wild dogs below. Unlike its social rivals, the leopard is solitary except when females are raising cubs. Colored pencil was the ideal medium for capturing the intricate textures of bark and fur. After more than 40 years of leading African safaris and observing countless lions, I continue to admire the continent’s great predators. Creating this piece brought many unforgettable memories vividly back to life.
