The bark of a tree supports an entire hidden ecosystem. Crevices and peeling layers provide habitat for countless invertebrates, while spiders weave webs among the curling bark, creating feeding opportunities for insect-eating birds. By preserving mature trees and standing deadwood, we protect these rich microhabitats and the complex food webs they support. In this painting, the bird has just searched beneath the loose bark for insects before pausing to survey its surroundings in search of its next meal. The work celebrates the remarkable biodiversity found within even the smallest corners of a healthy forest.
