I have been in awe of the tree-like yuccas of the Mojave Desert since childhood. Threatened by climate change and wildfires, the Joshua Tree provides indispensable habitat for many animals, including this feisty Ladderback Woodpecker. I was mesmerized by this charismatic visitor feasting on a spent flower.
