Growing up in the Sonoran Desert, I’ve always had a deep respect for the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum), with its striking orange and black scales and slow, deliberate movements. Its presence in the desert is both powerful and mesmerizing, and over time, I’ve come to admire its quiet strength. Inspired by its unique beauty, I wanted the challenge of capturing it in scratchboard art. The detailed texture of its scales and the contrast between its colors seemed like the perfect challenge for such a medium, pushing me to refine my skills while paying tribute to one of the desert’s most fascinating creatures.
