A pair of Great Horned Owls nested on the red rock cliffs in a wash near our home and I was able to observe them regularly over a period of months. It was easy to locate the two owlets and female on the exposed, rocky ledge each morning, but finding the male in the dense Cottonwood Tree proved more challenging. He was usually hidden in the dense leaves and tree bark. With patience, I nearly always found him, if not in the tree, then somewhere on the nearby cliffs. When creating this image of him, I chose a silver leaf background to eliminate the background noise, echoing the owl's resolve and focus on his young family.
