The Southern White-faced Owl (Ptilopsis granti) is a small gray backed owl with a dramatic white facial disc and bright orange eyes. Found in acacia savannas and dry woodlands in southern Africa, they roost by day in a dense tangle of leaves, making it especially delightful to spot one. At my first sighting, all I could say was, "Look at that face"! Their orange eyes especially equip them for hunting in the low light conditions of dawn and dusk.
