I photographed these two mischievous Great Horned Owl fledglings one afternoon in a Garry Oak woodland on Vancouver Island. They played together with twigs while their weary parents watched nearby. Although Great Horned Owls are apex predators, their greatest threats often come from human-made hazards, including traffic and electrical infrastructure. Sadly, one of these inquisitive young owls later landed on a transformer attached to a power pole and was killed instantly. This painting honours that brief moment of youthful curiosity while reminding us of the hidden dangers wildlife faces in human-altered landscapes. It is framed in reclaimed native Garry Oak from a tree estimated to be more than 200 years old.
