Unyielding is a pastel painting from my own reference inspired by a personal encounter during a safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa. While observing a large herd of Cape buffalo from the safety of a jeep, the experience shifted from awe to tension as one dominant male stepped forward to within feet of us, locking directly into my line of sight. He pawed the ground-a quiet but unmistakable signal-and in that moment, the distance between observer and subject felt uncomfortably thin. It was one of only two times on safari I felt genuine fear. Cape buffalo are among Africa’s most unpredictable and dangerous animals, known for attacking without warning and even turning on predators or hunters. Their sharp memory and reputation for retaliation add to their formidable presence. This piece captures not just the physical strength of the animal, but the raw unspoken power and unease of that unforgettable encounter.
