Early in 2024, I spent some time in Costa Rica visiting the Pacuare rainforest and delighted in observing a multitude of exotic wild birds. Oropendola de Montezuma's distinctive song immediately caught my attention as it echoed beneath the forest canopy. Through my binoculars, I identified that the high pitched, water-laser sound was coming from a large, rather fierce looking bird, delivering its song with such velocity, it often performed a summersault from its perch. Oropendolas are known for living in large colonies and weaving metre long, pendulous nests high in the tree tops. I had the opportunity to examine one of these nests close up and I’ve woven those vertical, decorative elements in an abstracted background for my painting.
