Wall color:
Though not yet endangered, the eastern screech owl faces growing pressure from habitat loss caused by land development and increased vehicle traffic threatening their ability to thrive. Small but fierce, they nest in tree hollows and hunt at the edges of daylight. Their eyes are well adapted to low light because of the high ratio of rods to cones, and their wing shape allows for nearly silent flight. The eastern screech owl mates for life. Their eyes seem to glow from within the dimness around them. I wanted to imagine the hidden moments when they first emerge in the half-light to hunt.
