In the subarctic region on Akimiski Island in Nunavut, Canada, is the southern extent of the Polar bears range. Several Polar bears will shore up on this large uninhabited Island in the James Bay for the summer months until the Ice returns in the autumn. I was fortunate enough to spend a portion of 2 summers working at a remote research field camp on this island assisting with work taking place on Canada Geese that reside and nest on this Island each year. There is truly a wild essence that is unexplainable seeing a wild Polar bear up close in the unspoiled wilderness. Portrayed in this painting is a Polar bear standing on a gravel bar overlooking a tidal flat at low tide with the waters of the large James Bay in the distance. I wanted to portray the best I could, the essence and wonder this place and these bears can bring to a person.
