The Western Sandpiper is one of the most abundant shorebirds migrating along the coast of British Columbia during spring and autumn. It breeds across Alaska and eastern Siberia before wintering from California to Peru. Because Canada supports such a significant portion of the species during migration, it has been identified as a priority for conservation and stewardship. I have spent many hours observing these energetic little birds as they race along the surf and forage among the tide pools near Ucluelet and Tofino. In this painting, I chose to portray a quieter and less familiar moment—a peaceful afternoon resting in the warmth of the sun.
