While kayaking through the shallow waters near Marathon in the Florida Keys, I became aware of the steady, unblinking gaze of a Great Egret watching my every move. Poised at the edge of the rocks—part sentinel, part hunter—the bird’s luminous white form stood out against the shifting blues, greens, and tans of South Florida’s crystal-clear waters. As I struggled to photograph the scene from my unsteady kayak, I was struck by the contrast between my own instability and the egret’s effortless balance. That quiet encounter became a reflection on the growing imbalance between our worlds and a reminder that even South Florida’s most timeless landscapes are changing in subtle but profound ways.
