The small orchard beside my home borders a woodland and attracts a wonderful variety of birds. Downy Woodpeckers are among my favourites, and this painting was inspired by an autumn encounter after the apples had been harvested and the moss had turned brown. A small male busily searched the old apple tree for insects while crisp, clear light illuminated the scene. I simplified the tangle of branches so the focus would remain on the bird and the beautiful light. Rendering the contrasting textures of bark, moss, and feathers was especially rewarding, and I felt grateful that this aging tree continues to provide such valuable habitat for wildlife.
