Paper itself often becomes as important to my work as the subject it portrays. While careful cutting and shaping showcase the possibilities of the medium, I also strive to let the paper contribute naturally to the story being told. In this piece, a Black-capped Chickadee pauses in an unexpected perch, capturing the lively spontaneity that makes this familiar backyard bird so endearing. The interplay of positive and negative shapes became an irresistible design challenge. By cutting shadows from papers of varying tones rather than simply drawing them, I create a genuine illusion of depth that changes subtly with the surrounding light. The result celebrates both the remarkable character of the chickadee and the expressive potential of paper as a sculptural medium.
