After an inspiring Artists for Conservation expedition to South Africa in 2025, I created this painting from one of many wildlife photographs taken during the journey. This male Southern African lion lives in the Kapama Private Game Reserve within the Greater Kruger region. One of four brothers, he fixed his gaze on our vehicle while feeding on a Cape buffalo carcass. Southern African lions are classified as vulnerable, facing ongoing threats from habitat loss, declining prey populations, and conflict with livestock producers. This portrait celebrates the quiet power and commanding presence of one of Africa’s most iconic predators while reminding us of the conservation challenges it continues to face.
