Llamas are members of the Camelid family; camels, alpacas, vicunas, guanacos and llamas. Millions of years ago llamas were common in North America but now found only domesticated in South America, while their cousins the vicuna and guanaco still remain wild in the South American mountains. I sketched and then painted this fellow at a local Fair where youth were exhibiting them for their many qualities such as; wool, packing abilities, meat production and guarding flocks of sheep. Yes, they do hum and they have a reputation of spitting if spoiled as a youngster. This llama did not spit. The first Llama used in California as a certified therapy animal was in 2008.
