The Mexican Wolf is the smallest and most genetically distinct subspecies of the North American Gray Wolf. Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, it is critically endangered, with recovery programs supporting its reintroduction in Arizona and Mexico. Habitat loss and predator control brought the species to the brink of extinction by the 1970s. Despite encouraging recovery efforts, it remains one of North America’s most endangered mammals. In Mexican folklore, El Lobo is portrayed as a noble, powerful, and often misunderstood guardian, reflecting both ancient Indigenous traditions and Southwestern cultural beliefs. El lobo is Spanish for “the wolf.”
