Calvin Nicholls
The illusion of depth, texture and form is created by the interaction of light and shadow on my low relief paper sculptures. A variety of blades and metal tools allow me to cut, emboss and transform the world's finest papers into the feathers and fur of my favourite wildlife species. At the foot of Mount Hakusan lies an ancient beech forest. Entering the forest during the fresh green season. It's my favorite place I often visit to draw inspiration for my work
Whenever I enter the forest, I always hug the trunk of a giant tree and put my ear to it. The pleasantly cool trunk seems to produce the sound of flowing water. Considering that all the water we drink is connected to this forest, I feel that not only the animals, but we ourselves are sustained by this forest.
