These beautiful turtles can be found across the western United States and parts of Canada. They prefer slow-moving, shallow water or ponds, marshes, and of course, places to bask in the sun, as I have chosen to depict them. Although their shells seem plain from above, they have very intricate, colorful designs underneath. Many cultures throughout the world have long valued the turtle for its steadfast persistence and relatively long life of 30-40 years in the wild.
