My wife and I encountered these majestic fellows one early June morning at nearly 12,000 feet at the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. The majority of elk in RMNP winter on the eastern side, but when the weather warms, begin the move up to over 50 square miles of RMNP's alpine tundra, with many pushing on to the lush green Kawuneeche Valley along the Colorado River on the other side of the Continental Divide. Something about the majesty, lighting, and unusual setting compelled me to share this experience with the world.
