I have stood in the midst of a King Penguin colony at South Georgia Island, amazed by the regal manner of the stately birds around me. Though nesting on land, they are masters of the sea, sometimes diving hundreds of feet after fish, krill, or squid. Climate change is predicted to move their food supply far from their nesting grounds, with perhaps a 70% decline in population in the next four decades. Our insatiable demand for energy has far-off consequences we rarely realize. Unless we change our ways, we will imperil the return of the King.
