We all remember how our mothers would ask us to call them when we got home so they wouldn't worry that we were lying in a ditch somewhere, and that we were safe. In this painting, “What Lies in the Ditch Lilies” shows a whitetail fawn safely tucked away in the ditch lilies as his mother safely looks on. In THIS case, the mom WANTS her child lying in the ditch.
