On a trip to a wildlife rehabilitation center, I was lucky to observe this barn owl at close range and in beautiful light. I grew up on a ranch in Northern California where we hear the barn owl's screeching call at night. There is a haunting quality about them that feels ethereal. I painted him in a looser, expressionistic style in a short amount of time to keep the painting feeling fresh and direct.
