This painting was produced as a commission and created from a plein air study painted on location in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park. One of the most charismatic and famous trees in the world, the Grizzly Giant is estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old plus or minus a couple of centuries. Although, Sequoias are adapted to fire, catastrophic fires resulting from climate change and massive fuel loads following more than a century of fire suppression management has resulted in the destruction of almost ten percent of all living sequoias in recent years. Hopefully the park's efforts will restore the natural fire process and protect the tree long into the future.
