I have always loved to watch seagulls soar. As a child being raised on a boat on the BC coast, gulls were a common sight, and the grace with which they soared over sparkling waters captured my imagination. My desire in painting these ‘common’ birds is to capture their unique beauty, how the light and shadows play on their white feathers, and how flocks flying together create beautiful, dynamic compositions of wide wings. Though they are commonly considered abundant, numbers of nesting Glaucous-winged Gulls in the southern Strait of Georgia peaked during the 1980s and have been declining steadily since.
