Ruby, depicted here in this portrait of a female Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii), is known to the Noongar people as 'karrak'. While the plumage of an adult male Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is predominantly jet black with broad red panels in the tail, the female is characterized by glossy black plumage with yellow spots on the head, neck and wings, and orange-yellow barring on the breast and tail.
